![]() ![]() The Van Reken Index contains information on the Holland area, including but not limited to businesses, schools, churches, buildings, railroads, etc. It indexes both the Holland City News and the Holland Sentinel. It is also available online on the Hope College Digital Commons website. It is available in book form on the microfilm cabinet in large blue binders, one for each decade from 1880-1990. It is a partial index to the newspapers – it does not index everything. ![]() The Van Reken Index was created by the historian Donald Van Reken, who has written many books about Holland’s history and worked at the library for many years. It does not index information on businesses, fires, crimes, etc. It indexes the following information: anniversaries, births, deaths, engagements, marriages, adoption and divorces. This index includes Holland City News articles that are of interest to patrons doing genealogical research. There are also obituary indexes available at Herrick, both in print and online. Herrick Library has compiled some indexes in recent years, and it is also possible to check for information on the Holland Sentinel website from 1997 to the present in their archives section. The Van Reken Index is available digitally through the Hope College Digital Commons and in print at Herrick Library in ten year increments. The earlier years of the index contain more information than the later years. It was compiled by a local historian, Donald Van Reken, and covers mostly Holland businesses, schools, churches, and other subjects, but not many names. The Van Reken Newspaper Index covers both the Holland City News and the Holland Sentinel from 1880-1990. There are some partial indexes to both papers. ![]() Although it began publication before 1912, there are no earlier papers available. The Holland Sentinel is a daily newspaper and is available on microfilm at Herrick from 1912 until the present. The Ottawa County Times was a weekly Democratic newspaper published in Holland. Also available online is the Ottawa County Times from 1892-1905. The complete Holland City News is also now available online through Hope College's Digital Commons. The Holland City News was a weekly paper which ran through 1977, and Herrick owns it on microfilm from 1872-1977. From 1980-1984, Wabeke played professionally in the San Francisco Giants, St. Doug Wabeke was an amazing man and so many of us have a void with him gone."Ī graduate of Central Michigan University, Wabeke played two seasons at GRCC, where he earned All-American honors and played two seasons at Central Michigan earning all-academic honors in both seasons. He’s just the kind of guy everybody wants to be friends with and for those of us who worked with him, or were coached by him he’s the guy that changed your life in a positive way. "He liked to enjoy life and he liked to help other people enjoy life too. Everything was to put you in a situation to be the best you could be," said Joey Sutherlin, who worked with Wabeke at GRCC. "I am not sure if there’s a magic formula on what made him such a great coach, but I think it really boils down to everything that he did in life he did at full speed whether it was coaching a baseball team teaching a baseball theory class working on an athletic budget or giving a player or coach feedback. He was elected into the Hall of Fame of the NJCAA Baseball Coaches Association and the Zeeland Athletics Hall of Fame in 2017. Wabake has also spent time coaching USA Baseball and at Davenport University. It didn't take long for Wabeke to find a new passion in coaching the game.įrom 1987-2004, Wabeke was the head baseball coach at Grand Rapids CC guiding the program to 14 Michigan Community College Athletic Association titles, nine Region XII championships and captured four National Junior College Athletic Association national championships. More: Zeeland to induct second Hall of Fame class He played mostly third base and was selected by the San Francisco Giants in the 1980 MLB Draft and played for the Fresno Giants, Shreveport Captains, Arkansas Travelers and Lynn Sailors, reaching as high as AA. ![]() He was a three-sport star at Zeeland, playing football, basketball and baseball, graduating in 1976. The cause of death is unknown at this time. Wabeke died on Saturday at the age of 65, his family confirmed. ![]()
